Perception of death in preschool children
HNOJSKÁ, Michaela
My bachelor´s thesis focuses on the issue of children´a perception of death in preschool age. Specifically, it explores how children cope with death of their father and the support they received within the family. The theoretical part addresses loss within the family, delving deeper into the perception of death. It also the specifics of children´s grieving and the possibilities of supporing children going through grief. Additionally it briefly discusses the topis of death in children´s books. The practical part is a research probe mapping how six children met and coped with the death of their father in preschool age. It represents how mothers and children have communicated and how much their lives have changed since this event. It turned out that the manner of death played a role in the settlement; children whose fathers were dying of a serious illness witnessed a gradual deterioration in their physical condition and accepted death as a kind of natural outcome. On the contrary, in children whose father died a violent death (suicide and murder), they reacted more strongly. In one case, where the mother kept her daughter a secret during the time of her father's death, a more difficult grieving is evident. In the monitored families, the established order of the day is observed and the children remember their father with a watch or looking at their joint photos. They sometimes use children's literature to communicate - Lentilka for Grandpa Eda, Špunťa and me or a stuffed animal who is the mediator of these conversations. In some cases, children have developed certain rituals that help them overcome the absence of their father.
